The Saturday races were rowed into a headwind, much moreso in the morning races. Sunday's race was rowed in good conditions.
For the 2nd year, UC Davis was invited to participate in the Windermere Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Stanford University and Windermere Real Estate at Redwood Shores. Participants included Stanford, Cal, Washington, Oregon St., Northeastern, Penn, Yale, Navy, Trinity, and British Columbia, among others. Windermere hosted all the teams for dinner on Friday night at the course, and the Discovery Bay branch of Windermere Real Estate served as hosts for the UC Davis athletes over the weekend, providing breakfast and lunch both days of racing.
The races provided the team with exposure to high-level racing and will help to prepare us for our championship races later in the spring. We did not come away with any wins, although the varsity 8 had 2 close races against high-level crews. The conditions on Saturday were very difficult, but unlike last year, where Washington pulled well away from us in a headwind, this year we held level with them for most of the race, losing water only on the starting and finishing sprints. In the Stanford race, the lead was determined in the first 500, as we hung on them the remainder of the race and pulled back several seats in the sprint. Against Trinity we committed to getting out stronger, and it paid off with a 6 seat lead at 750 down, but a bobble cost us momentum, allowing Trinity to pull even at the 1000, and they inched out front in the 3rd 500.
The Davis men next compete at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2. <% print_footer(); %>
